John Heitinga will be ultimately responsible on the bench at Ajax on Sunday during the Eredivisie match against Excelsior, the Amsterdam club reported on Friday. There is still no clarity about the long term.
Ajax’s first training session after the dismissal of trainer Alfred Schreuder was also led on Friday by Heitinga, who has been a trainer of Jong Ajax since July 2021. Schreuder was sent off on Thursday shortly after the 1-1 draw against FC Volendam, due to poor results.
Moreover, according to general director Edwin van der Sar, Ajax’s game gave no reason to expect that things will get better soon.
With Heitinga replacing Schreuder on the bench, Ajax hopes to win again against Excelsior on Sunday for the first time since October 22. The reigning national champion has been without a win for seven Eredivisie games in a row. That’s the worst streak since 1965.
