At least nine Palestinians have been killed in an Israeli army raid on the West Bank, according to Palestinian authorities. Sixteen others were injured. Palestinians say it is the deadliest attack in months.
The raid was on a refugee camp near the town of Jenin, in the north of the Israeli-occupied West Bank. Jenin is a stronghold of militant Palestinians. There have been more Israeli raids in the past year.
The Israeli army confirms that an operation is underway in the area, but has not yet responded to reports from the Palestinian side.
West Bank
Israel captured the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, in 1967 along with the Gaza Strip. Israel has occupied the area ever since. In parts of it, Palestinians have a form of self-government. About three million Palestinians live in the West Bank. In addition, more than 600,000 Israeli settlers now live there. Under international law, the settlements in which they live are illegal.
Many Palestinians see the West Bank as part of their future state, with East Jerusalem as its capital, even though the prospect of it is shrinking. Serious peace negotiations between Israeli and Palestinian leaders have not been held for more than a decade.
