According to the entity, plant species have standing death; loss of verticality due to excessive inclination and “mechanical affectation” due to the detachment of some of its branches, for which the Botanical Garden of Bogotá authorized its felling.
“Many of those (trees) are foreign species that do not anchor very well in the ground and also several of them are many, many years old. We have eucalyptus, black acacias and other species that tend to overturn in the city. We have had accidents in past years really unfortunate. In 2001, a fall from a eucalyptus tree seriously affected a woman; In 2016, another tree from the same park fell on top of a taxi, fortunately without human losses, but material ones,” said Environment Secretary Carolina Urrutia.

This is how, in order to guarantee the life and integrity of the citizens who daily visit the park to carry out passive recreation activities, such as contemplation, or active recreation, such as sports, the Secretariat announced that the 33 species will be felled.
“In this park we not only have a community that is very involved and defends the park itself and its trees, but we also have a popular action that forces us to carry out any action we do inside the park. The judges, within the framework of the Popular Action, have recognized that the park’s trees require maintenance and that when necessary, felling, pruning and any silvicultural treatment activity must be carried out to guarantee the physical integrity of the people who walk or they play sports in the park,” said Urrutia.

Regarding the future of the trees, the Ministry of Environment indicated that the 33 trees that will be intervened, that is, “will be replaced or compensated by new individuals”, which will correspond to native species of the sector that not only adapt to the soil of Bogotá, but also, that they are contemplated in the forestry manual.

Because the entity is in charge of granting permits and authorizations for silvicultural management in the public or private space of the city, the Secretariat called on the community in general to understand that the felling of trees must be carried out to ensure the safety of the community.
“The fellings will, of course, be compensated in accordance with the legal framework, in that five for one that we commit to in Bogotá and we have been making every effort to socialize and agree on them with the community. We have also informed the judge that they are absolutely necessary and we hope that the community understands that, although it is painful, always losing one of our trees and affecting the landscape, that compensation will guarantee that the space maintains its natural qualities and will also be an opportunity for together let’s take care of this new woodland”, assured the Secretary of the Environment.
With the intervention, according to Urrutia, it will avoid, among other things, that the species are more susceptible to overturning or tearing of their branches, putting the community at risk, especially during this rainy season and strong winds.
“These silvicultural interventions must be carried out to ensure the physical integrity of people who pass through or play sports in the park,” concluded the Secretary of the Environment of Bogotá.
