Dozens of shepherds have been killed in a bomb explosion in Nigeria. It happened in Rukubi, a village southeast of the capital Abuja.
Much is unclear about the cause. A group representing the herders says an airstrike by the army was the cause.
Nigeria’s army fights jihadist and criminal groups in the north of the country, sometimes resulting in civilian deaths.
In Central Nigeria there is also a struggle between nomadic herders, who are predominantly Muslim, and farmers, who adhere to Christianity. It is therefore also seen as an ethno-religious conflict, but according to experts it is much more about scarce grassland and access to water.
The death toll from the explosion varies. Some sources report 27 deaths, others put about 50 victims.
