The General Consulate of Mexico in San Francisco reported the death of two people of Mexican nationality during the shooting that occurred in the town of Half Moon Bay, in San Mateo County, California on January 23, 2023.

The shooting occurred in a city of just over 11,000 inhabitants, 19 kilometers south of San Francisco. The events occurred less than 48 hours after another gunman killed 11 people in a dance studio near Los Angeles.

The head of the Consulate General of Mexico in San Francisco and Consular Protection personnel are already at the scene to provide support to the families of the victims and the people who were displaced by the unfortunate event. It was detailed that the authorities will follow up to investigate the incident.
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs extends its condolences to the relatives for their irreparable loss and will continue to provide consular assistance and protection to the affected persons,” the statement added at the end.

The alleged perpetrator of the attack was arrested by police, according to information provided by the San Mateo County sheriff. The detainee was identified as Zhao Chunli, 67, who was located in a car in the parking lot of the sheriff’s substation.
