Large parts of Japan have to deal with heavy snowfall, cold and strong winds. The winter weather has disrupted traffic in the country. Hundreds of flights have been canceled and train traffic has come to a partial standstill.
Another person died due to the stormy winter weather. There are two other deaths, but it is still being investigated whether they were killed by the weather, a government official says.
Especially in the west of Japan, on the coast of the Sea of Japan, there is a lot of snow. About 93 centimeters of snow has fallen in the southwestern city of Maniwa in the past 24 hours.
At least 300 domestic flights have been cancelled. And according to local media, several high-speed trains in the north have been delayed or shut down.
On a highway in the middle of the country, traffic is almost at a standstill. In the western city of Kyoto, about 3,000 travelers have been stranded at two train stations. Some of them had to spend the night at one of the stations. Others were trapped in one of the 15 trains between the two stops.
A cargo ship has sunk off the coast of Japan. The cause is not known, but the strong wind is being taken into account. At least 14 of the 22 people on board were taken out of the water.
The wintry weather in Japan is expected to last until tomorrow.
