NEC coach Rogier Meijer is absolutely unhappy about Iván Márquez’s red card in the defeat against Feyenoord. The defender was sent off on Wednesday just before half-time after holding Santiago Giménez, after which Orkun Kökçü made the 2-0 from 11 meters.
Referee Edwin de Graaf initially gave Márquez a yellow card. After viewing the images, the arbitrator changed his mind and presented the red print. Feyenoord was already 1-0 by a goal from Javairô Dilrosun.
Meijer thought that the defender absolutely did not deserve a red card, because there were still enough NEC players around. “Outrageous. This game was ruined in the 44th minute. Whatever happens, we will appeal 100 percent,” said the ESPN coach.
“Is this already red? I really don’t understand that. And if you still look back at it, then I don’t understand it at all. Our back is still wrong. With ten men we defended well. Anyway, this match is destroyed just before halftime.”

‘Red card ruined the game’
Captain Lasse Schöne also did not agree with the referee’s decision. “I know what the rules are, but this was an easy red card. It was a bit too much punishment. It ruined the game.”
According to Schöne, the second half for NEC was mainly about limiting the damage. “We had hoped for a better result today. The second half was not much. I don’t think anyone enjoyed themselves.”
NEC is ninth in the Eredivisie. The Nijmegenare will resume the competition on Saturday with a home game against number six Sparta Rotterdam.
