Ajax nominated Pier Eringa as the new chairman of the supervisory board on Wednesday. The 62-year-old Frisian must succeed Leen Meijaard, who will leave later this year after five years.
Meijaard recently announced during the shareholders’ meeting of Ajax that he is stepping down from his position at the Johan Cruijff ArenA. He was not available for a third term.
A successor has now been found in Eringa, whose nomination will be decided on March 14. The driver was previously chief of police at the Flevoland police force and president-director at ProRail. In the football world, he was chairman of the supervisory board of the amateur section of the KNVB for eight years.
Eringa was recently chair of Stichting Open Nederland, a social initiative that contributed to the gradual reopening of social life in the Netherlands during the corona pandemic. It is the intention that he commits himself to Ajax for three years and eight months.
On a sporting level, things are currently going badly for Ajax, which is disappointingly fifth in the Eredivisie. The team of the criticized trainer Alfred Schreuder hopes to end a series of six league matches without a win against FC Volendam on Thursday at home against FC Volendam (kick-off: 9 p.m.).
