In 2022, more people died than expected again. This is evident from new annual figures from the Central Bureau of Statistics. Important causes for the so-called excess mortality were the flu and corona.
About 170,000 people died in the Netherlands last year. That was about 14,500 deaths (9 percent) more than expected. More people died in all age groups.
The excess mortality was slightly lower than in 2020 and 2021, when the Netherlands was still struggling with covid-19.
