The suspect in Saturday’s fatal shooting in Monterey Park, US, had hundreds of bullets in his home and was probably also working on homemade silencers. The Los Angeles Police Chief said this at a press conference.
Various electronic devices and a gun were also found in the home of the suspect, 72-year-old Huu Can Tran. He was found dead in a van yesterday. The man was known to the police: he was once arrested in 1990 for illegal possession of weapons.
Death toll risen
The death toll from the shooting at the dance club in Monterey Park, not far from Los Angeles, has risen to eleven. One of those injured in hospital has died, police said. All but one person of the victims are 60 years or older.
At the time of the shooting incident, thousands of people were on the streets because of the Chinese New Year. Police found 42 bullet casings at the crime scene. One of the victims was probably shot dead in a car.
The motive for the shooting is still unknown. The police also say they have questions about it. “What drove a madman to do this?” said police chief Robert Luna. “We don’t know, but we’re trying to find out.”
Saved countless lives
After his act in Monterey Park, the suspected shooter also wanted to make victims in a club in the nearby city of Alhambra. He drew a gun, but it was taken away by a bystander.
“He’s a hero,” Police Chief Luna said of this man, Brandon Tsay. With his action he saved “countless lives”, according to the police.
