Turkey has summoned the Dutch ambassador in Ankara for tearing up a Koran in The Hague on Sunday.
Edwin Wagensveld, leader of anti-Islam organization Pegida, destroyed the holy book of Islam during a protest in front of the House of Representatives. He actually wanted to set the Koran on fire, but the police did not allow that.
“It’s just about freedom of expression here. I just think this should be possible in the Netherlands,” Wagensveld said as he tore the pages from a Koran.
Ankara demands action
The Turkish Foreign Ministry condemns the “cowardly attack on our holy book”. According to the Turks, it has once again been made clear that “Islamophobia, discrimination and xenophobia know no borders in Europe”.
Ankara also wants the Netherlands to take steps against Wagensveld, so that such actions do not occur in the future. The Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs was not immediately available for comment.
