PSV failed to equalize in points with leader Feyenoord in the Eredivisie on Tuesday evening. The team of trainer Ruud van Nistelrooij surprisingly lost in Drenthe to relegation candidate FC Emmen.
PSV played a full half with one man less due to a red card from Mauro Júnior. The Brazilian had to leave just before half-time after a tough tackle on the calves of Rui Mendes. At that time, the 1-0 final score was already on the scoreboard due to a goal from Lucas Bernadou.
For PSV it was the fourth time in five games that points were lost. The team from Eindhoven won against Vitesse on Saturday, but did not triumph in the previous matches against Fortuna Sittard (2-2), Sparta (0-0) and AZ (0-1).
Leader Feyenoord can increase the lead on number three PSV to six points on Wednesday if it manages to win against NEC. Number four FC Twente (away against Vitesse) and number five Ajax (home against FC Volendam) can also pass PSV later this week in the ranking.
PSV continues the Eredivisie on Saturday with a home game against Go Ahead Eagles. Earlier this season, the Brabant team won 2-5 in Deventer.

PSV has a hard time with Emmen throughout the match
PSV had a hard time with Emmen, the number sixteen in the Eredivisie, for almost the entire match. Only in the first quarter of the game did Van Nistelrooij’s formation clearly have the upper hand, but several attempts by Johan Bakayoko – the replacement for the injured Luuk de Jong – did not yield any results.
It only really became clear that PSV was going to have a difficult evening when Bernadou opened the score in the 24th minute. The midfielder lashed out from the edge of the penalty area, surprising PSV goalkeeper Walter Benítez, who saw the ball arrive too late.
Even after the opening goal of the home team, PSV was unable to shake Emmen. The visitors played way too sloppy and created almost no opportunities.

PSV further in trouble due to rare red card
The problems became even bigger for PSV when Mauro Júnior had to leave. The midfielder timed a tackle on Mendes completely wrong and immediately realized that his game was over. Mendes was also unable to continue: he had to leave the field on a stretcher.
It was the first time in 91 matches for PSV that a red card was collected. On January 26, 2020, Ibrahim Afellay was the last PSV player to receive a red card in the Eredivisie.
After the break, the game image from the first half continued. PSV tried, but Emmen easily stood up. The home team came closest to a goal through Jeroen Veldmate when his free kick hit the crossbar.
Xavi Simons provided the final chord on behalf of the visitors. The Orange-international headed wide in injury time after a nice cross from Phillipp Mwene.
