On April 16 Trelew elects mayor and councilors (REUTERS)
Provinces and cities that split the elections of the national elections began to formalize the processes for the population to attend the polls. In Chubut, Trelew will open the electoral calendar in the province on April 16 with the election of the mayor and 10 councilors for the period 2023-2027.
The electoral schedule of the second most populated town in Chubut was ratified in the last session of the Deliberative Council, which approved by a large majority the resolution calling for the Peronist mayor Adrián Maderna and the schedule proposed by the Municipal Electoral Tribunal.
The call for elections was published this weekend in the Official Gazette of the municipality. Juan Aguilar, president of the Trelew Deliberative Council, commented that the body of mayors approved the electoral schedule and set “rules of the game for the next municipal elections because strictly speaking the power to call belongs to the mayor who had already resolved it at the beginning of this month ”.

The approved schedule will begin next Friday the 27th with the publication of the provisional register of voters, which will remain open to complaints until February 17. Else itself, February 17 will also be the closing date of the register of foreigners and on March 19 the model of ballots will be presented to the court.
On February 15 the term for the constitution of alliances expires and a month later, on March 15, the term for the registration of candidates proclaimed in party internals will end.
In this way, the electoral campaign will be enabled as of February 18, the date on which the definitive registers will be printed and published.
A particular fact of the elections in Trelew is that there will be no Open, Simultaneous and Mandatory Primaries (PASO) and it opens a mystery about how the candidates will be chosen in the different political spaces since the time to organize an internal election is very short.
Within this framework, the Justicialist councilor Leandro Espinoza, who abstained from voting on the call, interpreted: “I have the impression that the mayor set a date that he wanted it to be uncoupled from the provincial and national ones and from there the times to adapt the schedule to April 16.
“The risk is that this enables challenges and judicial presentations in the face of doubts as to whether the deadlines established by electoral legislation are met,” added the mayor.
For his part, the rationale stated by Mayor Maderna for calling municipal elections is that “we deserve to discuss our own problems and possible solutions, beyond the general discussion that takes place within the national or provincial framework.” Trelew has an estimated population of 120,000 inhabitants and is located 20 kilometers from Rawson, the capital of Chubut.
Chubut is one of the provinces where unity is in tension in Together for Change due to the autonomous role of radicalism. The best-placed candidate for governor in the polls continues to be PRO national senator Ignacio Torres, however, the head of the Chubutense UCR, Damián Bliss, Rawson community chief, has already launched his candidacy to govern the provincial Executive Power in a move that could divide the vote into JxC and consequently favor the current governor, Mariano Arcioni, who was unable to impose the Ley de Mottos in the Legislature, but did manage to suspend the PASO.
