Argentine President Alberto Fernández warmly greets his Brazilian counterpart Luiz Inazio Lula da Silvaone of the fifteen heads of State and Government attending the seventh summit of CELAC, the community of Latin American and Caribbean States held in Buenos Aires.
Brazil is once again present after the withdrawal of the body decided by his predecessor Jair Bolsonaro in 2020, alleging that it gave prominence to non-democratic regimes such as those of Venezuela, Cuba or Nicaragua.
In his speech, Uruguayan President Luis Lacalle Pou advocated the creation of a large free trade zone throughout the region and that CELAC not be a club of ideological friends.
More integration against poverty
The Brazilian leader has asked for his part greater regional integration to face the reality of poverty and hunger.
Fernández denounced the extreme right movements:
“Democracy is definitely at risk. After the pandemic we have seen how far-right sectors have stood up and are threatening each of our peoples.”
Cuban President Miguel Díaz Canel has once again denounced, as usual, the economic suffocation imposed by the United States.
While the Venezuelan Nicolás Maduro, who canceled his physical presence at the last minute for fear of demonstrations or being arrested, has telematically asked to join forces against foreign interventionism and create a structure similar to that of the European Union.
