This is a call for peace. And a demand that all nuclear weapons be destroyed.
That’s what they asked for International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War (IPPNW) in their demonstration on Sunday in front of the city hall of Hamburg.
The organization, awarded the Nobel Peace Prizewas created in the 80s by American and Soviet doctors against the nuclear arms race.
Protesters are concerned that the war in Ukraine will increase the risk of such weapons being used.
“Especially for the countries with the largest nuclear weapons, Russia and the USA, which is also indirectly involved in the war, have to declare that they will not use nuclear weapons in this war. No first use of nuclear weapons”, specifies Angelika Claussen, co-chair of the organization.
From Hamburg, our special envoy Kristina Jovanovski brings us more details:
This protest marks the second anniversary of the UN treaty banning the use of nuclear weapons. It is believed that Russia will most likely deploy tactical or so-called small nuclear weapons.
But the experts gathered at a conference prior to this demonstration affirmed that there are no small nuclear weapons.
And it’s not just weapons that concern activists. They also discussed the threats of nuclear power, and the potential damage from potential accidents at power plants around the world.
International experts advocate creating a protection zone around the largest Ukrainian power plant, the Zaporizhia.
“Impose some kind of zones around them so they’re not in any danger of being hit by missiles, bombs or shelling, so that would minimize the risk, but then again, it wouldn’t completely eliminate the risk because meltdowns can still happen. from loss of power, from human error,” says Linda Gunter of Beyond Nuclear International.
Another group of experts will highlight the risks of nuclear weapons on Tuesday.
The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists will update your Doomsday Clockwhich symbolizes how close they believe humans are… to self-annihilation.
