The man suspected of shooting 10 people at a California nightclub was surrounded by police on Sunday. This is reported by various local media.
The encirclement takes place in the town of Torrance, just over 40 kilometers from Monterey Park. The shooting happened in this city with a majority of residents of Asian descent. According to witnesses, the suspect – initially described as a “man of Asian descent” – fled in a white van.
At least 10 people have been killed in the Monterey Park shooting. At least ten people were also injured. Four injured people are in a critical condition in hospital. The gunman fled before police arrived at the club.
Police have yet to say anything about the shooter’s motive. For example, it is still being investigated whether the perpetrator knew the victims.
Man shot around with semi-automatic
The man opened fire in a nightclub an hour after the city’s grand Asian New Year (Lunar New Year) was celebrated. Witnesses told the Los Angeles Times newspaper that he fired at random with a semi-automatic rifle. He would have had ammunition with him to reload his rifle. According to those present at the club, the owner of the nightclub is one of the dead.
Police are also investigating whether there is a connection to a possible shooting at a dance club in Alhambra. Many Asian Americans also live in that city, which is located next to Monterey Park
Monterey Park and Alhambra are about eight miles east of Los Angeles. Tens of thousands of people gathered in Monterey Park to celebrate Asian New Year, according to media reports. The event would have been over for about an hour when the shooting started. Festivities were also planned on Sunday, but they have been cancelled.
Why not “Chinese New Year”?
We use the term Lunar New Year in this message, because it is not certain at this time that it is a celebration in honor of Chinese New Year. Chinese New Year is specifically about a celebration in China or among Chinese communities in other places. Lunar New Year is a broader concept and is celebrated in Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia and South Korea, among others.
