Michael van Gerwen has won his first match since the World Cup final without any problems. De Brabander was 6-3 too strong for the Swede Andreas Harrysson in the first round of the Nordic Darts Masters in Copenhagen on Friday.
The 33-year-old Van Gerwen took a break lead in the fourth leg and did not relinquish it. The number three in the world averaged 91.58 per three arrows and a finish percentage of 24.
In the quarterfinals, Van Gerwen will take on Peter Wright on Saturday, who defeated the Swede Dennis Nilsson in his opening match: 6-5. The semi-finals and final battle of the Nordic Darts Masters will also be played later this weekend.
Van Gerwen came into action in Copenhagen for the first time since his defeat in the World Cup final at the beginning of this year. Then ‘Mighty Mike’ lost 4-7 to Michael Smith in a spectacle.
The Nordic Darts Masters is a tournament that has been part of the World Series of Darts since 2021. There are eight players from the PDC Tour and eight ‘regional’ qualifiers.
Two years ago, Van Gerwen won the first edition of the Nordic Darts Masters. Dimitri Van den Bergh won the tournament last year. The Belgian beat the Let Madars Razma (6-2) in the first round on Friday and now meets Gerwyn Price.
