A really important, emotional and historic moment for the Yazidi community, the one lived in the German Parliament. The Bundestag recognized this Thursday as “genocide”the crimes committed by the self-styled Islamic State Group against this religious minority in Iraq, in August 2014.
It is estimated that the jihadist group killed in a matter of a few days more than 5000 Yazidisenslaving some 7,000 women and girls and causing the displacement of hundreds of thousands of people.
The Bundestag also announced its intention not only to recognize the genocide but to render justice to the victims, announcing a series of measures to help this Kurdish-speaking minority.
All MEPs present voted in favor of the text, tabled by the ruling coalition and the conservative opposition CDU, which recognizes the genocide.
“One of the objectives of the Islamic State was the total eradication of the yazidi communitythe motion read. “More than 5,000 Yazidis were tortured and brutally killed by the Islamist group, especially in 2014.”
the yazidi Nadia Murad, Nobel Peace Prize 2018, has celebrated that Germany “leads by example”, asking in turn “all governments that have not yet done so to officially recognize the genocide”. Murad lamented how “unfortunately, most countries in the world still do not commit to recognizing this genocide, let alone prosecuting and convicting the Islamic State criminals who committed it.”
