Memphis Depay already feels the confidence of trainer Diego Simeone at Atlético Madrid. The Orange-international announced this on Friday during his presentation at the Spanish club, which took over from FC Barcelona.
“Simeone knows me well from my time at Barcelona, but also from the time at Lyon,” said Depay. “He was already enthusiastic about me when I played football in France. His intention is that I will play again in the form I had there.”
The 28-year-old Memphis exchanged FC Barcelona on Friday for 3 million euros for Atlético Madrid. He signed a 2.5-year contract with the current number four of La Liga.
Memphis said he was happy to meet the Argentinian coach. “My first day here was intense, but the trainer immediately wanted to know how I felt and what he could do for me.”
“He helps me to adapt as quickly as possible so that I feel at home here. And I’m happy to be here. Hopefully I can show what I’m worth on the field soon,” said the attacker, who at Barcelona under trainer Xavi mainly had to do with raids.
Memphis already trained with Atlético on Thursday, which will play against Real Valladolid in La Liga on Saturday. He may not be eligible to play yet. The striker may make his debut against fellow townsman Real Madrid next week. Then the two rivals will play against each other in the Copa del Rey.
