Western aid has been decisive in countering the Russian offensive, but it is not enough for Ukraine to fully recover its territory, which is why it is demanding Leopard tanks. While Germany is reluctant to give its go-ahead… Euronews has discussed this issue with Fabrice Pothier, former NATO director of policy planning:
“Not providing enough weapons, especially armored vehicles, would be the best way to prolong this war, and even extend it beyond Ukraine. I think that is clear to most European governments, especially in Northern and Eastern Europe, that they have done everything possible.
However, Germany is becoming isolated because it is not willing to do what history is asking it to do. And I think that facing history, it is key if Olaf Scholz will be willing to do what he has to do; that is to say allow European countries to provide Leopard tanks, but also allow Germany to provide said Leopard tanks so that the Ukrainian forces can defend themselves and mount another counter-offensive next month.”
