The body of the 10-year-old boy who was trapped in a shaft of a concrete foundation pile in Vietnam has been recovered, state media reported.
The boy was on New Year’s Eve at a construction site in the Mekong Delta with friends looking for old iron and fell into the shaft. Rescue workers tried to free the boy for days, but after four days local authorities said they had lost hope that he was still alive and that it would be difficult to recover his body.
The shaft was more than 35 meters deep and had a diameter of 25 centimeters. According to the Reuters news agency, officers heard the boy calling for help shortly after the fall, but then remained silent.
‘Died of injuries from the fall’
After weeks of work, two rescuers descended last night to recover the body. According to local authorities, the body was recovered intact, reports Vietnam News. After an autopsy, it was transported to the boy’s home, about a kilometer from the accident.
A representative from Dong Thap province said the autopsy revealed that the boy died from multiple injuries sustained during the fall. The cause of the accident is still under investigation.
