Ukraine needs more weapons and military equipment. Western supporters of the war-torn country will meet this week in Germany to discuss how to meet kyiv’s needs vis-à-vis Russia.
Meanwhile, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said Wednesday at the World Economic Forum in Davos that the only way to reach a negotiated peace is to support Ukraine: “Arms are the path to peace and That may sound like a paradox, but the only way to have a negotiated deal is to convince President Putin that he is not going to win on the battlefield.”
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz is key to supplying modern Leopard 2 tanks, which top Ukraine’s request list. Scholz has veto power over any decision regarding the shipment of these German-made military vehicles. He could now allow its export to the former Soviet republic if the United States agrees to send its own tanks.
In Davos he strongly underlined Berlin’s commitment: “We will continue to do so as long as it is necessary, and while we do so and show that the Ukrainians can count on our support for their courageous fight, it is also clear that we will prevent this from turning into a war between Russia and NATO”.
Tank supply will be one of the main topics of Friday’s meeting of the so-called Ukrainian Contact Group at Germany’s Ramstein airbase. Donors of military aid to Ukraine meet this Thursday in Estonia.
