The 24-year-old Gianni de W. from Etten-Leur, who is suspected of online extortion of underage girls, was already in the picture of the police in 2014. The then 16-year-old De W. asked a girl to send images via the internet, after which she went to the police. The Public Prosecution Service (OM) confirms this to NU.nl after reporting by De Telegraaf.
The girl did not report the action of De W. The police conducted a so-called ‘stop talk’ with him in response to the incident, says a spokesperson for the Public Prosecution Service. It is not known whether and why De W. was no longer monitored after the incident in 2014.
On Thursday it was announced that De W. has 150 different folders with nude images of different girls on a computer. He had thousands of images of some of them. According to the Public Prosecution Service, De W. approached the various girls via social media such as Snapchat and Instagram with the request to send nude images to him. He then extorted them by threatening to post the images online if they did not send more images.
De W. is suspected of producing and possessing child pornography, sexual assault, fornication and temptation of (underage) girls to fornication via the internet, it was announced on Thursday in the court in Breda during a hearing in the suspect’s case. De W. was arrested on October 11 and has been detained ever since.
Identities of several dozen victims have already been found
The investigation into the man is still ongoing, the spokesman for the OM emphasizes. So far, the identities of several dozen victims have been traced. Eight girls have filed a report. The police and the Public Prosecution Service expect this number to rise considerably. The victims are mostly minors and live all over the country.
In court it turned out that the Public Prosecution Service thinks that the man has made more than a hundred victims. According to the public prosecutor, De W. has made their lives “hell.” He will remain in prison for the next three months. Due to the large number of victims, the vice squad of the Zeeland-West Brabant police force, which is conducting the investigation, is being supported by extra detectives.
