Real Madrid got rid of Villarreal in the Copa del Rey on Thursday evening after a nice catch-up race. Villarreal led 2-0 at home, but Real Madrid scored no less than three goals in the second half. FC Barcelona won a visit to third divisionist AD Ceuta, partly thanks to two goals from Robert Lewandowski: 0-5.
Villarreal – where Arnaut Danjuma was missing due to an upcoming transfer – got off to a good start and already scored the opening goal in the fifth minute. Midfielder Étienne Capoue suddenly took a swing from a difficult angle and the ball disappeared hard into the top corner. Just before the break, Samuel Chukwueze scored the second goal for the home team after a long attack.
After the break, Real put things in order. Five minutes after the break, Vinícius took advantage of an error in Villarreal’s build-up by scoring the tying goal with a placed shot. In the 69th minute, defender Éder Militão scored the equalizer by being the first to respond to a rebound.
Substitute Dani Ceballos, who cannot count on much playing time at ‘De Koninklijke’ this season, signed for the final agreement and completed the ‘remontada’ in the 87th minute. The Spanish midfielder got the ball perfectly in front of his right leg after a smooth attack over the right flank and pulled the trigger: 2-3.

Barcelona without De Jong easily past third divisionist
Barcelona had it a lot easier before. The Catalans took office without Frenkie de Jong, who was also not on the bench with the Catalans. Compatriot Memphis Depay is only a player of the ‘Blaugranas’ on paper. The 86-time Oranje-international was already on the training field at his new club Atlético Madrid on Thursday evening.
Compared to last weekend’s supercup final won against Real Madrid, trainer Xavi opted for ten other basic players. Only striker Lewandowski kept his place against Ceuta, a club from Gibraltar.
In the first half, Barcelona mainly had a lot of ball possession, but the Catalans managed to enforce few great opportunities. The spell was only broken in the 41st minute by Raphinha. The Brazilian attacker curled the ball beautifully into the far corner: 0-1.
After the break, Barcelona showed much better play and Xavi’s team ran out to 0-5. Successively Lewandowski (tikker), Ansu Fati (nice dribble and ditto shot) and Franck Kessié (header) managed to put their name on the scoreboard. After this, Lewandowski provided the final chord: the Pole dribbled in from the left and calmly placed the ball in the corner.
In addition to Barcelona and Real Madrid, Atlético Madrid, Valencia and Real Sociedad, among others, are still active in the Spanish cup tournament. It is not yet known which clubs will play each other in the quarter-finals.
