Ronald Koeman will be presented in Zeist next Monday as national coach of the Dutch national team, the KNVB announced on Tuesday. Louis van Gaal’s successor already signed a contract in April up to and including the 2026 World Cup.
In addition to Koeman, assistants Erwin Koeman, Sipke Hulshoff and goalkeeper coach Patrick Lodewijks are also present at the KNVB Campus.
The first international match under Koeman, the away match against France in the European Championship qualification, is not until March 24. Three days later, Gibraltar is the opponent in De Kuip.
It will be the second term as national coach for the 59-year-old Koeman, after he had already been in charge of the Orange from the beginning of 2018 to August 2020.
Koeman reached the Nations League final at the time and forced qualification for the 2020 European Championship. That tournament was not played until a year later due to the corona pandemic. The born Zaandammer had already left the Orange at that time, because he had become a trainer of FC Barcelona.
In the first year of Koeman’s second period, there are two goals for the Dutch national team. Under his leadership, the Orange must qualify for the 2024 European Championship in Germany and the final round of the Nations League in their own country awaits next summer.
The matches of the final round of the Nations League will be played in Enschede and Rotterdam. Spain, Italy and Croatia are the other countries that have qualified.
The draw for the final round is next Wednesday at 11:00 am. Then the Orange will know which country will be the opponent in the semi-finals on June 14. The final battle of the Nations League is on June 18 in De Kuip.
