The death of a Canadian medic member of the Ukrainian Foreign Legion killed in action during an assault by the mercenary group Wagner has been confirmed by his family.
Gregory Tsekhmistrenko was operating in a Ukrainian team in the town of Bakhmut in the eastern region of Donetsk when he was killed in an attack by the mercenary force.
The nurse’s death was confirmed by the victim’s sister to CTV News, who tried unsuccessfully to verify the information with Global Affairs Canada.
Alisa Suprunova said she found out about her brother’s death from consolation messages on the Instagram page and other details from members of her combat unit.
An American journalist who had previously interviewed Tsekhmistrenko told CTV News on Sunday that he was in contact with the commander of the unit where the Canadian medic operated.
