It was on March 4, 2019 when the death of Rodrigo Riobóo was announced at the age of 39 in a hospital in Spain. Although her father managed to get a Mexican judge to authorize the arrest of María Isabel, the Spanish government has denied the woman’s extradition because there are no indications that she has committed any crime.
According to the death certificate, Rodrigo Riobóo died of “respiratory failure and infection,” as well as severe sepsis, the Reforma media reported. However, in the eyes of the businessman – who is also the husband of Minister Yasmín Esquivel – it was allegedly the responsibility of his ex-daughter-in-law and the medical neglect he suffered during their eight years of marriage.

And it is that according to the engineer, when his son married Cal y Mayor in 2011 he drastically changed his eating habits, in addition to starting to smoke and drink alcoholic beverages. This, coupled with psychiatric problems, caused her health to deteriorate until she finally lost her life.
According to José María Riobóo, María Isabel’s intentions were to seize her son’s money and property, since she even pointed out that the woman had disposed of 15 million pesos in a period of six years (2013 to 2019). That is how he accused her of having carried out a “preconceived and sophisticated plan” that would have resulted in her death.

Following these accusations and accusations, in February 2020 a Mexico City control judge granted an arrest warrant against the widow for the “crime of homicide by reason of kinship.” In addition, after the corresponding investigations began, the Financial Intelligence Unit (UIF) froze María Isabel’s bank accounts -according to judicial documents from Mexico-, while the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE) requested the Spanish government to extradite her. her.
However, the Spanish government refused to hand over Cal y Mayor to the Mexican authorities despite their intervention, because the National Court of Madrid concluded that there were no indications that the woman was possibly involved in the death of her husband, since he suffered from various chronic diseases.
For this reason, they denied that there is a criminal procedure for this case and assured that María Isabel has not been investigated or questioned in this regard. Likewise, it was argued that since the events occurred in Spanish territory, judicial jurisdiction would fall on the courts of the Iberian country.

Faced with this situation, Cal y Mayor commented that they have encountered a series of difficulties so that their children do not lose their father’s inheritance. For this reason, he accused the Judiciary of impartiality and attributed it to the fact that José María Riobóo is married to the minister of the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (SCJN), Yasmín Esquivel.
In this sense, the woman pointed out the possibility of a “conflict of interest” and accused the Mexican authorities of allegedly fabricating a crime together with her former father-in-law. Despite this, María Isabel will continue in Madrid where she currently resides.
In his morning conference this Monday, January 16, President López Obrador addressed the alleged plagiarism of Yasmín Esquivel’s thesis and denied that he had met with her or with her husband, whom he described as “a great engineer and one of the structuralists most important in the country.”
