One day round trip. It is in this form that the Vatican envisages the Pope’s trip to Marseilles. According to information from La Croix, the pope should go to Marseille in the fall to take part in a meeting of bishops from the Mediterranean.
In recent weeks, Cardinal Jean-Marc Aveline, Archbishop of Marseilles, had the opportunity to set the first outlines of this Pope’s trip, during his trips to Rome. The pope’s visit to Marseille could take place on Sunday, October 1, La Croix learned from Roman sources.
Meeting between the Pope and Cardinal Aveline on January 12
The new French cardinal is in fact present in the Vatican twice a month to take part in the plenary meetings of the dicastery for bishops, of which he is a member. The pope and the cardinal notably met on the morning of Thursday, January 12.
Pope Francis confirmed his desire to go to Marseille in an interview published Sunday, December 18 by the Spanish daily ABC. A visit that has not yet been officially announced by the Vatican.
“Perhaps next year I will go to Marseilles for the Mediterranean meeting,” assured the pope in this interview conducted by two Spanish journalists. The Phocaean city must indeed host a meeting of the bishops of the Mediterranean, the precise date of which has not yet been fixed, one year after that organized in Florence, and three years after a first edition in Bari, in Italy.
