Partly thanks to a goal by Teun Koopmeiners, Atalanta booked a resounding 8-2 win over Salernitana in Serie A on Sunday. Halfway through, the eager subtopper already led 5-1 against the number fifteen.
Koopmeiners had a busy first half. The former AZ player provided the assist after 23 minutes from a corner kick to Giorgio Scalvini’s 3-1, received a yellow card after half an hour and used a rebound after 38 minutes that arose after a penalty kick he missed. Koopmeiners thus made it 4-1.
Jeremie Boga, Ademola Lookman and Rasmus Højlund also scored in the first half against the Salernitana of basic player Tonny Vilhena. The visitors had an answer to Boga’s 1-0 via Boulaye Dia, but were then outclassed by a swirling Atalanta.
Often duels that have a goal-rich first half bleed to death. This was not the case in Bergamo. Lookman scored the 6-1 shortly after the break, after which Hans Nicolussi did something in return for the visitors. However, Ederson Silva quickly brought the margin back to five. Atalanta then kept attacking, chasing the double digits. The swinging home team did not get further than 8-2 – via a goal from Nadir Zortea.
Not only Koopmeiners, but also Marten de Roon started in the base at Atalanta. The controller was changed halfway through. Hans Hateboer stayed on the bench.
The club from Bergamo is sixth with 34 points. The gap with number three Juventus is only three points.
Atalanta will meet Juventus in the next round. Koopmeiners misses that match due to a suspension.
