The anti-coal demonstration in the western German town of Lützerath escalates into violent clashes between police and protesters.

The protests are due to the fact that the German town is going to be destroyed to expand one of the largest coal mines, operated by the energy company RWE.

The young Swedish activist Greta Thunberg has joined the activists and has called the federal government’s decision shameful.

For several days, dozens of protesters have barricaded themselves to prevent the police from evicting the area.
