kyiv dawns between bombs. A series of explosions rocked the Ukrainian capital early Saturday before air raid sirens began wailing.
Ukraine feared a new attack on its critical civilian infrastructure. The authorities in the capital have reported explosions and a fire at a facility. Missile fragments have been found and so far no casualties have been reported.
Explosions were heard in the Dniprovskyi district, a residential area on the left bank of the Dnieper river, kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said. Klitschko also said that fragments of a missile fell in a non-residential area of the Holosiivskyi district, on the right bank, and that a fire broke out in a building there. So far no casualties have been reported.
It was not immediately clear if the target was several kyiv facilities or just the one reported to have been hit.
In the outlying region of kyiv, a residential building in the town of Kopyliv was hit, and the windows of nearby houses were blown up, Tymoshenko said.
A total of 18 private houses were damaged in the region, according to regional governor Oleksii Kuleba. “There are damaged roofs and windows,” but no victims, Kuleba said in a Telegram message. He added that a fire at a “critical infrastructure facility” in the region has been brought under control.
Earlier on Saturday, two Russian missiles hit Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city, the Kharkiv region governor said.
kyiv had not been attacked by missiles since New Year’s Eve.
