Rebound in Covid-19 cases in China.
The Chinese National Health Commission has reported almost 60,000 virus-related deaths since early December.
The figure includes 5,503 deaths from respiratory failure caused by COVID-19 and 54,435 deaths from other diseases combined with COVID-19 since December 8, the Commission has announced.
The reported figure more than doubles China’s official death toll from COVID-19 to 10,775 since the disease was first detected in the central city of Wuhan in late 2019.
According to the Chinese body, the deaths have occurred in hospitals, which leaves open the possibility that the number is higher, if those who died in their homes are counted.
The report comes against a backdrop that Beijing stopped reporting data on COVID-19 deaths and infections, at the same time as it lifted anti-virus controls in early December despite an increase in infections since October.
The World Health Organization and other governments have requested information from Beijing.
