Striker Vivianne Miedema and coach Sarina Wiegman have been nominated for a FIFA award. Among the men, Cristiano Ronaldo is missing from the nomination list for World Footballer of the Year. Title holder Robert Lewandowski and world champion Lionel Messi do have a chance to win the prize.
Miedema is one of the fourteen nominees for the women. The currently injured striker was once again on target for her club Arsenal, but was unable to mean much to the Netherlands at the European Championships last year, partly due to a corona infection. The Dutch were eliminated in the quarterfinals by France.
Wiegman has been nominated among the female trainers. The coach from The Hague won the European Championship in their own country with the women’s team of England. Wiegman already took the FIFA prize in 2017 and 2020.
FIFA reports that not only the 2021/2022 season, but also the period up to and including the men’s World Cup in November and December counts. Captains of the national teams, national coaches, journalists and fans can vote until February 3.

Lewandowski was voted best player in the past two years. The trophy has existed since 2016. Ronaldo (2016, 2017), Luka Modric (2018) and Messi (2019) were the previous winners.
