Philosopher, poet and theologian, Paulin was considered one of the most learned men of his time. The Emperor Charlemagne calls him to make him one of his advisers in religious matters, then appoints him bishop of the great diocese of Aquileia (Friuli). Paulin undertook to convert the Avars and the Slovenes to the faith and is one of the great defenders of the “Filioque”, added in the Latin text of the Council of Nicaea.
