An eleven-year-old child was killed in a shooting in the Antwerp district of Merksem. Local police say she died when a home came under fire. The perpetrators shot at a garage door, but people lived behind it.
The child would not have been directly hit by the bullets. She would have died when a combination microwave oven was hit and exploded. According to local media, it is a girl. Attempts were made to resuscitate her at the scene. Two family members were slightly injured.
The family was known to the police and that is why Mayor Bart de Wever suspects that there is a link with the drug crime in Antwerp. “Incidents have happened before. So it seems that this is a settlement, again, in the environment,” said De Wever on the TV program Terzake.
“There is a drug war going on. Criminals are attacking the houses of other criminals. We have been experiencing that for months and what I feared for a long time has happened,” said De Wever. “An innocent victim has fallen, a child.”
