In the Belgian Merksem, a district of the city of Antwerp, an 11-year-old girl was killed in a shooting. The house where the girl was staying was attacked.
In the news program Terzak, Antwerp mayor Bart De Wever expresses the suspicion that it concerns a settlement in the drug circuit. “The affected family is known. There have been incidents there before.” The mayor speaks of a drug war in his city, with criminals attacking the homes of other criminals. “What I feared for a long time has happened: an innocent victim has fallen.”
The perpetrators shot at the garage door of the house, but behind it was a living space, an improvised kitchen, according to the mayor. Family members, including children, were sitting there at the time of the shooting.
A microwave was hit during the shooting, which exploded, the mayor knows. The girl would have been hit by that. According to local media, attempts were made to resuscitate the girl on the spot, but to no avail.
Two other family members were slightly injured in the shooting.
