Dutch base jumper crashed while jumping in Switzerland

A Dutch parachute jumper died in Switzerland on Wednesday. According to his sister, Jarno Cordia, 44, is a well-known base jumper. These are daredevils who do not jump out of an airplane, but from a high place on a mountain or building.

“The new year started so beautifully, a leap of faith in his beloved Swiss. It became his last,” writes Liesbeth Cordia on Facebook.

The accident happened in Lauterbrunnen. Cordia jumped from a platform at the top of a sheer rock face. He wore a so-called wingsuit, a suit with fabric between arms and legs that allows you to fly longer.

According to the Swiss police, who did not give Cordia’s name, it seems that the base jumper has crashed several times against the rock wall for unknown reasons. There was nothing the rescue services could do for him.

The police and the Public Prosecution Service are investigating the cause of the accident.
