It seems that Netflix is developing a triple-A PC shooter. They do this at their new game studio in Los Angeles, which is led by Chacko Sonny, former Overwatch producer and Blizzard vice president.
According to mobilegamer.biz The Netflix Games Studio is looking for a game director with shooter experience to work on a “brand new triple-A PC game”. Like Overwatch, it looks set to be a live-service game, as Netflix specifically asks for experience in that area.
The candidate must have a “good understanding of engaging content and how to deliver that content”. They must also be “very passionate about social systems and gameplay, both competitive and cooperative”.
The vacancy also requires the candidate to be able to come up with a world, characters and narrative “that you could find in a Netflix movie or series”. The game must be built in Unreal Engine.
Other than that, we can’t deduce much from the vacancy, except that Netflix is looking for someone with at least ten years of game design experience and who has also worked as a game director before. It looks like this is the start of a whole wave of vacancies to fill the studio, but it will therefore be years before we hear anything about the content of Netflix’s triple-A game.
Netflix has been taking steps towards the gaming industry for a while now. For example, they bought up a number of mobile game developers and opened Netflix Games Studio last October.
Mike Verdu, the vice president of Netflix’s games department, spoke out about Chacko Sonny. “He could have done anything, but chose to work here. It’s not often that people like him come to a new organization to take on a big project, unless they feel that organization is really serious and doing this for all the right reasons.”
Netflix doesn’t hide their video game ambitions. In January, they said they plan to become the “best-in-class” gaming service in the industry.
