The Secretary General of the UN, António Guterres, denounced this Monday, decades after the Cold War, that the atomic “saber rattling” and stressed that “the era of nuclear blackmail must end”.
“The idea that any country could fight and win a nuclear war is insane. Any use of a nuclear weapon would lead to a humanitarian apocalypse.”Guterres warned at an event to commemorate the Day for the Elimination of Nuclear Weapons.
In his speech, the head of the United Nations recalled that During the Cold War the world was on the brink of atomic annihilation. and criticized that today it is heard again “the noise of nuclear sabers”.
Guterres did not directly target any country, but in recent days Russian President Vladimir Putin has been heavily criticized by many other governments after warning that he is willing to use all means, which would include the huge atomic arsenal of his country, in the context of the war in Ukraine.
“I call on all States to use all avenues for dialogue, diplomacy and negotiation to lower tensions, reduce risk and eliminate the nuclear threat”said the Portuguese diplomat, who also called for a “new vision for nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation.”
Guterres advocated moving towards the total elimination of atomic weapons and assured that without this there can be no peace or trust.
“Nuclear weapons are the most destructive power ever created. They offer no security, only desolation and chaos. Their removal would be the greatest gift we could leave to future generations”he insisted.
