President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador accepted that he changed his mind about returning the military to the barracks, as he said in the electoral campaignseeing the problem of insecurity and violence that they inherited.
In press conference “morning” and express question, López Obrador reiterated that the National Guard should be one more branch of the Secretary of National Defense (Sedena) and must have a military command.
“President, you mentioned that even in the campaign, if you became president, you would have the Armed Forces or the Army return to the barracks and that would take them the first six months of government, did you change your mind?” he was asked.
“Yes, I did change my mind seeing the problem they inherited from me. How to deal with the problem of insecurity? Yes, I knew from the beginning and I am totally convinced that peace is the product of justice and that is the basis of the security policy, caring for young people, improving the living conditions of the majority of Mexicans, combat poverty, corruption, we are doing all of that, that impunity is not allowed”.
“We need (the National Guard) not to go to waste as happened with the Federal Police and I feel that the National Guard should be dependent on the Ministry of Defense, one more branch, like the Air Force, as well as the National Guard with the task of guaranteeing public security in coordination with the state governments, which are autonomous, sovereigns, and with the municipal governments, but that there is a National Guard with discipline, with professionalism, with honesty,” he said.
– “With military command?”She was asked.
-“Yes, with military command”he replied.
