Vitesse brought keeper Kjell Scherpen back to the Eredivisie on Tuesday. The former player of FC Emmen and Ajax comes over from Brighton & Hove Albion on a rental basis.
With the arrival of Scherpen, Vitesse hopes to have solved the goalkeeper problem. Markus Schubert is injured and Jeroen Houwen, who played the German from the base last season, did not always make a good impression. For example, he blundered during the first round of this season against Feyenoord.
“Kjell is a keeper who can stand there immediately. Despite his relatively young age, he has the necessary experience and also has enough match and training rhythm,” says Benjamin Schmedes, Vitesse’s technical director.
“In addition, Kjell is very familiar with Dutch football, in particular with the Eredivisie. We were still looking for a certain type of goalkeeper and Kjell meets the desired profile with his length, reach and appearance.”
Scherpen made his professional debut at FC Emmen and earned a transfer to Ajax in the summer of 2019. The youth international did not break through in Amsterdam. Ajax sold him to Brighton last summer, which leased him to KV Oostende in the past six months. In Arnhem he is the sixth summer reinforcement.
Vitesse disappointed in the first two Eredivisie rounds by losing quite a chance against Feyenoord (2-5) and Excelsior (3-1). A new chance for the first points will follow at home against sc Heerenveen on Saturday.
