There is unrest among the users of streaming services in the Netherlands. Last March, we were delighted with the arrival of HBO Max, when we were able to take out the service for a lifetime discount for the first month. But now that the service will soon be merged with streaming service Discovery+, the big question is: will subscribers keep this lifetime discount? In this article we will go into all the information.
Warner Media has a big job waiting
It will be a big job to merge the two different streaming services, especially because the services are both unique in their content. That will take time, according to Warner Bros. Discovery CEO JB Perrette: “There is still a lot to do, we are determined to get it right, which will take some time”. For the time being, it is not known what the new service will be called and whether all films & series from both services will continue to be shown on it.
US next summer, Europe in 2024
What is known is that we still have a while until this big change will take place. Warner Bros. Discovery hopes to launch the unified service in the US in the summer of 2023, while in Europe we will have to wait until early 2024.
Our primary focus for the rollout will be in the markets where HBO Max has already launched. We plan to launch the service sequentially, starting in the US next summer. Latin America will follow later in the year. European markets with HBO Max will follow in early ’24.

Will the lifetime discount remain for subscribers?
To celebrate the launch, HBO Max offered a promotion for the first month that paid only €2.99 per month for the basic subscription and only €3.99 for the standard subscription. You will then receive this 50% discount for the rest of your life, HBO Max reported at the time. With later price increases you will always continue to pay half the price.
But with HBO Max as we know it turning into a brand new service, there’s no guarantee this discount will stay. For the time being, it is therefore still unclear whether current subscribers will still benefit from their lifetime discount after the merger. It is quite possible that the new service will offer a discount to existing customers, but whether that will be the same as the current agreement is unclear. As soon as the streaming service announces something, we will inform you about this.
