An unexpected visitor delights bathers on a beach in Baerum County, outside Oslo. She’s called Freya, after the Norse goddess of love, and she’s a walrus turned celebrity. She has been on the coast for months and was first seen in northern Norway in 2019.
Since then, sightings have been reported in the UK, the Netherlands, Denmark and Sweden.
Like another vacationer, she likes to lie in the sun, sometimes sinking the boats she lands on with her 600 kilos of weight.
The Norwegian authorities assure that the mammal is in good condition and can remain where it is, although they insist that caution should be exercised when swimming in the sea and keeping a distance from the animal, preventing it from attacking if it feels threatened.
Walruses are a protected species that often spend the summer in icy waters, but loss of sea ice caused by climate change is limiting their habitat.
