In recent weeks, the news has often been about farmers protesting. They are angry about the government’s nitrogen plans. Those plans state that farmers may keep fewer animals in some places. Some farmers may have to stop altogether.
A number of farmers are trying to change their farm themselves. They want to emit fewer harmful substances and become more sustainable.
Geneviève lives with her family on a farm where they spend a lot of time there.
On the farm, for example, they do not use fertilizer, because that pollutes the soil. They also try to give the animals the best possible life. You can see more about it in the video.
What’s the problem?
You can’t see nitrogen, but it’s everywhere. That’s okay, unless it comes into contact with other gases in the air. Then two different substances can arise that cause problems.
When exhaust fumes from cars and factories come together with nitrogen, nitrogen oxides. When substances from manure from farm animals come together with nitrogen, this causes ammonia.
There is more and more of these two substances and that is bad for nature reserves. Plant species die because of it. And not just plants, also animals that eat those plants.
To counteract this, factories and farms must emit less. That is in the plans of the government.
