In the United States, a 12-year-old girl who was kidnapped from a home in rural Alabama managed to escape and was found walking on the side of the road, which sparked an investigation that led the police to the discovery of two bodies in a state of decomposition at the house where the minor had been held, authorities reported Tuesday.
However, Jose Paulino Pascual Reyes, 37, was arrested on a kidnapping charge, said the Tallapoosa County Police Chief Jimmy Abbett at a news conference.
Multiple murder charges may be filed
In turn, multiple additional capital murder charges are likely to be filed, District Attorney Jeremy Duerr said. A motorist driving through a rural residential area saw a girl on the side of the road Monday morning and pulled over, authorities said. Court records indicate the minor had been drugged and tied up but managed to escape, according to WSFA-TV.
And it is that after a driver picked up the girl and called the 911 emergency number, which sparked an investigation and a search that led to police officers to the discovery of two decomposing bodies inside the residence where Pascual Reyes lived and where the girl was believed to have been held, Abbett said.
Other people lived in the residence, but no one else was there when police arrived, he said. The man was arrested in Auburn, Abbett said. It is currently unknown what information the minor may have provided to authorities, but Abbett described her as a hero.
Police did not immediately release the names of those killed or the cause of death, and court records they did not include the name of a lawyer who could speak on behalf of Pascual Reyes.
