SAlmost 1,100 hectares were affected by forest fires in the Czech nature reserve of Bohemian Switzerland.
The fire has been active for a week in the north of the country.
According to the firefighters, there would be reason to be “slightly optimistic”, since the fire-fighting strategy is beginning to take effect.
Some 500 people who had to leave the village of Vysoká Lípa last Tuesday were able to return to their homes. 750 firefighters continue to fight the flames.
Martina Gotzováa spokesman for the Fire Brigade of the Hradec Kralove region explained that they had deployed all available firefighting aviation equipment, six helicopters and five planes.
The nearby Bohemian Switzerland nature reserve in Germany is also burning.
Firefighters reported numerous new sources of fire that occurred this Sunday.
In Bernsdorf, Upper Lusatia, the police are investigating how unknown assailants set fire to undergrowth in a forest area. Firefighters managed to extinguish the fire.
