Virgil van Dijk has won the first prize of the season with Liverpool. ‘The Reds’ were 3-1 too strong for Manchester City in Leicester on Saturday in the battle for the Community Shield.
Liverpool were the better before half-time and took the lead after twenty minutes via Trent Alexander-Arnold, whose effort was slightly touched by Nathan Ake. The Dutch defender had a base place at City.
In the second half, pressure from manager Josep Guardiola’s side increased, resulting in the equalizer for Julián Álvarez twenty minutes before the end. The substitute Argentine attacker scored on his debut.
Yet it was Liverpool that took home the first prize of the season. After a handball from City defender Rúben Dias, a penalty was given on the advice of the VAR, which was used flawlessly by Mohamed Salah: 2-1.
In the final seconds, striker Darwin Núñez, who had come over from Benfica, determined the final score. Erling Haaland made his official debut at City. Van Dijk’s direct opponent did not score.
Liverpool have won the Community Shield 15 times before, most recently in 2006. The team of manager Jürgen Klopp starts the Premier League season in a week visiting Fulham. City will then visit West Ham United.
