On the Emilia Romagna riverside in Italy, bathing was temporarily banned in some areas due to a higher than normal concentration of E. coli bacteria. These are the territory of Goro, in the Pinarella di Cervia section, and 26 sections in the Rimini area.
This phenomenon usually occurs in the hours following intense rains, however, this case is unusual given the continuous drought.
The Regional Agency for Environmental Prevention of Emilia-Romagna (ARPAE) has a hypothesis regarding this situation that it described as abnormal. For the agency, this phenomenon can be related to a set of exceptional weather conditions that could have affected the composition of the marine waters.
The municipality of Rimini, however, has made its own analyzes available which would reveal that the legal limits are not exceeded.
