French President Emmanuel Macron received Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman at the presidential palace, marking a further step in the Saudi leader’s diplomatic rehabilitation less than four years after the journalist’s assassination. Jamal Khashoggi.
The visit by the prince of the oil-rich state came after France and other European nations sought to secure alternative energy sources to lessen their reliance on oil and gas supplies from Russia. France has also been a major supplier of weapons and defense to the Gulf nations.
The meeting described as “a working dinner”, and Amnesty International Francewants human rights to be on the table.
“There will be discussions about oil, about oil deliveries with contracts that are undoubtedly dizzying. They must not evade the human rights situation in Saudi Arabia, which is truly catastrophic,” said Jean-Claude, president of Amnesty International France. Samouiller.
“We can see that there is a certain rehabilitation of this person (Mohammed ben Salmane). He was with Joe Biden, he was with Emmanuel Macron, he was in Greece. He is doing the rounds of European countries, we can see that he is doing a charm offensive, a media offensive.
In fact, the meeting between US President Joe Biden and the Crown Prince has cost him several critics: the editor of the Washington Post stated in an article that the meeting erodes Biden’s moral authority.
Even so, both countries have shown their willingness to improve their mutual relations.
