Many consumers share an account for a streaming service like Netflix. To do this, you must provide your e-mail address and password. That sounds unsafe, but it can be done responsibly.

Netflix prefers not to let users share their accounts, so the company is testing a number of ways to counter that. For example, in some countries, customers have to pay extra to add a profile for someone outside their own household.
In this way, Netflix hopes to earn more money and attract more subscribers. But even if you share your account in a way that Netflix tolerates or considers legal, it’s not safe to just share your password.
If you want to give someone else access to your Netflix account, it is always better to log in to the person’s device yourself. That way you are still the only one who knows the login details, while the other person can just watch movies and series. A possible disadvantage is that you have to be physically present once the account has been logged out.
Use a password manager
If you don’t want to or can’t do that, for example because of a great distance, there is another way to share the data in a safe way. Common password managers, such as LastPass and 1Password, allow you to send a secure code to someone else. They must first authenticate to see the password. The sender can set who can see the information and for how long, for example once or for a week.
Depending on which password manager you use, it is even possible to share a login without showing the password. The recipient then gives the password manager permission to log in to an account.
Always create a strong password
It is always advisable to set a password that you do not use for other services. It is safest to set a different password for each service. Also, using variations on existing passwords (for example, with the addition of a number or an exclamation mark) is a bad idea. If a hacker from one service finds out the password, he can enter the variations on other platforms to get in.
That is why it is good to choose a very strong password. You can have a password manager do that (even in such a way that you don’t even know the password yourself) or you can come up with something yourself. Then preferably something along, such as a sentence that you can remember where you replace certain letters with numbers or other characters. You can also often use spaces in passwords.
